| A Rant |
The betrayal committed by the US loomed ahead ever since Trump’s victory in November of 2024, now this threat materialized in the recent planned escalation by President and would-be dictator Donald J. Trump and his lapdog and vice-president JD Vance.
This is a call upon the civil society across Europe who are still determined to fight fascism and totalitarianism. We must continue our fight against the fifth column!

Donald J. Trump and the Shadow Presidency of Elon Musk
On the very first day, just after his inauguration, Trump signed various executive orders which would set the tone for the coming 54 days – January 20 to March 3.
He showed his blatant disregard for the US Constitution by trying to abolish the 14th amendment – the birthright citizenship. Executive after executive order, he showed how little he cares about the separation of powers; his lapdog JD Vance and watchdog Karoline Leavitt barking at the judges for daring to do the minimum in a democracy.
He showed his ignorance and anti-science sentiment by withdrawing from the WHO and the Paris Climate agreement. As the biggest financial backer to the United Nations health agency, as well as later choking USAID, he made it clear that he and his entire administration are willing to let thousands of people die unnecessary deaths and let millions suffer for their anti-intellectual fanaticism. His declaration of a national emergency, to allow more fossil fuel extraction, accompanies his withdrawal from the Paris Climate agreement – itself a minimum given the climate crisis. Even from a mere economic perspective, which is sadly prevalent in most minds of the political stage, this is suicide.
The costs now will be far less than the expenses we would have to pay later, in the near and far future, that the climate crisis causes with extreme weather, extinction of various species and the collapse of ecosystems and to the very foundation of nations: agriculture.
He showed his contempt for the rule of law by pardoning the January 6 insurrectionists.
Those who sought to prevent a democratically-elected government through violence were punished. Unfortunately, the main enemy and agitator Trump never faced justice for his months long preperations by denying the 2020 election results – supported by Fox News and individual politicians like Ted Cruz. Afterwards, they first tried to frame it as a ‚false flag‘ from Antifa (Anti-fascists), but then quickly moved on to frame them as victims.
The insurrectionist Trump got away and now he pardoned his fellow traitors to the US.
He showed that he despises minorities – be it their skin colour, sexuality, gender or gender identity. 78 executive orders of the Biden-Administration, about a dozen among them supporting racial equity and combating LGBT discrimination. And the favourite scapegoat of the fascists: the transgender community. The only threat they pose is that to a fragile and ramshackled 20th century ideology as the Project 2025 authors and JD Vance support.
There’s no „gender ideology“, there’s only people who have a right to exist and express themselves for what they actually are. As we have seen with the DEI, it’s all about returning to the 1950s to create a US only for white Christians – the land of hostility.
He showed that he wants to establish an apparatus of sycophants.
By reclassifying thousands of federal employees as political hires, he made it easier for them to be fired. In the last year of his term, his executive order „Schedule F“ aimed to do that, but it was later rescinded by the Biden-Administration. In his second term, he now returns to this and follows the playbook of Project 2025 as well. The „Department of Government Efficiency“ (DOGE), run by Shadow President Elon „The Husk“ Musk, is very much part of it by recklessly tearing through the government and making the lives of millions of Americans worse as well as millions of people worldwide. His team of peculiar unqualified individuals rampaging through a system they do not understand and do not care to understand while even cutting funds for veterans on grounds of austerity. Finally, there went the press freedom in the White House because journalists who actually do their job are not desirable in this new Trumpian period. AP, for instance, refuses to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and was barred entry as a result.
And while all this was taking place, JD Vance had the audacity to lecture Europe on democracy at the Munich Security Conference (February 14, 2025 to February 16, 2025).
Vance’s master floods the US with one executive order after another, knowing that a lot of the things they do goes against the constitution and violates the rule of law, in the hopes that some of it will stick due to sheer amount of them. It’s an administrative coup, that’s it!
Not to mention the imperialistic threats to take Canada, the Panama Canal and Greenland by force if Trump deems it necessary. A blatant disregard for national sovereignty.
Moving on from the recap to the actual topic of this entry: the betrayal of Ukraine.
The US‘ Betrayal of Ukraine
Donald Trump’s admiration for dictators was already appearent during his first tenure and even during his election campaign in 2016 when he asked Russia to intervene for him.
His envisioned „peace“ for Ukraine, 9 years later, would thus prove to be just a capitulation to Russian demands. Here a short timeline of the recent escalation:
February 18
A four-hour long meeting between Russia and the US in Saudi-Arabia.
Russia successfully sold their propaganda to Trump, since he would only repeat their views.
February 19
After a statement from Volodymyr Zelensky that Trump lives in a ‚disinformation space‘ fuelled by Russia, Trump defamed the Ukrainian president and called him a dictator.
He also falsely claimed that Zelensky’s approval rating was down to 4%, when in reality 63% of Ukrainians approved of him and 57% trusted him (Reuters).
February 25
The US opposed an European-drafted resolution that condemned Moscow’s actions and supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Then the US voted for a resolution of the UN Security Council which ony called for an end to the war, containing no criticism of Russia.
„UNGA members backed the European resolution by 93 votes but, extraordinarily, the US did not abstain but actually voted against it, along with Russia, Israel, North Korea, Sudan, Belarus, Hungary and 11 other states, with 65 abstentions.“ (BBC)
February 28
A meeting between the Ukrainian President and the US President abruptly ends, after JD Vance and Trump scolded Zelensky for not ending the war thus „risking world war three“.
It was a role reversal of victim and perpetrator, broadcasted live on TV. And I have no doubts that it was staged to intimidate Zelensky and humiliate Ukraine.
For the past three years, Russia targeted civil infrastructure on purpose – from the energy supply (especially during Winter) to apartments, hospitals, schools and even cultural sites. Russia kidnapped Ukrainian children, around 19,000 since the war of aggression started.
Consequently, the only thing the Trump-Administration has done is to signal to the world that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are worthwhile. Strengthening Russia who hungers for even more territory instead of lifting Ukraine into a position of power as it was done by the Biden-Administration.
It also shows that Trump keeps demanding more and more from Ukraine, such as giving up on the NATO-membership and pressuring Ukraine into a mineral deal without any securities. At the same time, Russia has to do absolutely nothing, Trump is even in favour of the territorial expansion and will probably sell it as a concession or some form of „compromise“.
I’m glad the EU is stepping up by forming a Coalition of the Willing, which also prevents Putin’s satellite state Hungary from paralyzing them through vetoes. Unfortunately, they had plenty of time in the past three years and failed to act by preparing for the worst case.
The war is far from over and the courage and fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people has shown that Russia’s victory is not inevitable, in fact it would take the aggressor 118 years to conquer all Ukrainian territory at this rate:
„The very fact that there is a debate to be had about which country has the advantage in this war shows a remarkable inversion in expectation. Early on, even after Ukraine’s initial Javelin-enabled repulsion of the first wave of Russian invasion, pessimists noted that time favored Russia, the larger and richer of the two countries, and the one whose military had more experience with slow, grinding wars. “In 2022, all the analysts assumed that Putin and Russia would be better equipped to weather a long-term, protracted war against a smaller Ukraine,” Barros said. “That assumption has been invalidated. Protracting the conflict now actually hurts the Russians more than the Ukrainians.”“ (The Atlantic)
Ukraine will survive and thrive in spite of adversity!
Alliance of the Democracies
Given the authoritarian pinch grip from the West with the new US-Administration and from the East with Russia, it is now more important than ever that we enter a formal alliance with democracies worldwide. Mutual assistance through coordinated actions, in cyberwarfare, intelligence and other areas. A cultural and democratic exchange to consolidate a resilient bond and assisting them when authoritarian countries try to blackmail anyone. Here’s what we need to do:
- Drones and Cyberwarfare
The war in Ukraine has shown that drones are of extraordinary importance for current warfare. Hence, it is important to build up factories where we can produce them en mass. They don’t have to be expensive, but they need to overwhelm the enemy and make war too risky. Specialized submarines (in various sizes) could carry drones and send wave after wave in guerilla war fashion to demoralize the enemy, make large Naval fleets too expensive to have around and turn once safe harbors into targets.
The increasing reliance on technology makes cyberwarfare, defensive and offensive, a necessity. First to defend from hostile countries and second to develop the capacity to attack and for espionage during times of war. - Strengthening the International Criminal Court (ICC)
The ICC is recognized by 125 countries: 33 African states, 19 Asia-Pacific states,
20 states from eastern Europe, 28 Latin American and Caribbean states and 25 states from western Europe and other states. You may have heard about it in context of the Israeli-Hamas war and the war of aggression against Ukraine, while none of them were signatories of the Rome Statue I still consider this an important step to uphold the Nuremberg Principles: criminalization of aggressive war, establishment of individual criminal responsibility under international law and the removal of Head of State immunity ‚and other forms of immunity for core international crimes‘, laying the groundwork ‚for foundational definitions, modes of liability and determining complicity for these crimes‘ and ensuring fair trials for the accused in international proceedings.
The most important thing the signatories can do is enforcing the ruling of the ICC.
In a world where authoritarianism is on the rise again, it is a very important institution to signal that there’s still hope for justice. The International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is perhaps one of the most well-known: Ratko Mladić, for instance, was found guilty of genocide and war crimes in November 2017 (who’s believed to have masterminded the Srebrenica massacre) and was sentenced to life in prison.
He first tried to evade justice by disappearing after Milošević’s arrest in 2001, but
10 years later he was caught by Serbian authorities and placed on trial in 2012.
Any resistance on the part of the government to act against international arrest warrants should be met with public outcry, demonstrations, sit-ins and else.
The police, in each signatory country, will hopefully do their duty and arrest those wanted by warrant of arrest regardless what those in power may demand. It’s matter of rule of law, and the police should act here as a law enforcer of international law too. - Equal Representation and Participation
It is not enough that all of those countries are represented. They must be treated as equals, no matter how small their military or economic might be. Regardless how big the surface area of their country is, how many inhabitate the country or other factors.
We all face the same threats – from imperialistic nations that have territorial claims and interests in dividing the world into spheres of influence and, as I’ll elaborate in the next point, the climate crisis.
If we want to lay the foundation of a better world, a just world, we will have to cast aside our claim to power. We can still take initiatives, but mindfully.
We should lead by example, not by force. Force is reserved for defense and counter-attacks in times of war. - Coordination
Given the veto power of the US, Russia and China as permanent members of the Security Council, the UN has become pretty much useless in that regard.
Consequently, we as democracies have to stick together outside of the dying old world order that was established after WW2. The UN will still be of us for symbolic voting (in order to know the position of a nation on a topic) and the one or other structure (like the World Health Organization) which deserves to be protected and reformed. As long the UN exists, however, it should be supported to protect the WHO among others.
What should be done?
While it is unlikely that the authoritarian forces will disband the UN entirely, in order to uphold an illusion of a law-based international order, we still have to prepare and establish parallel structures from within the old one. The best place for the headquarters would be Switzerland, considering its long democratic tradition, overall stability and neutrality. That way we could establish the basis of a new just world order, once the time of monsters is over. In short: use current structures for communication, establish new structures for future actions.
How does an outside coordination look like?
Like the Coalition of the Willing within the EU, the Alliance would use existing channels but in a way to circumvent the troublemakers.
Votes in the UN would then be for guidance before proceeding on other levels (the EU could invite Japan or other nations to Brussels for further talks and actions). For instance if the US did in fact attempt to occupy Greenland, the EU and other countries could damage the economy of the US through collective actions such as boycotts.
Instead of using centralized social media platforms owned by the American oligarchy, the Alliance of Democracies could move to platforms like Mastodon, BlueSky, Pixelfed and/or create a democratic and decentralized network of their own. The same goes for applications like Microsoft and E-Mail providers: open-source alternatives like Linux improved quite a lot since its inception. That way the promise of democratization, that the Internet once seemed to promise, would return.
What about other nations?
The alliance doesn’t mean a full halt on diplomatic relations (a nonsensical move) to non-democratic or struggling democracies. Diplomatic channels would remain and trade relations continue, what the alliance should signalize is that the democracies worldwide will no longer accept the deepening alliance of anti-democratic governments and movements within their own country. It’s a political war of rivaling systems (democracy vs dictatorships); peaceful coexistence is impossible as the war of aggression against Ukraine has shown, the repeated threats made by China against Taiwan and the now openly expansionist US-government against Greenland, Panama and Canada.
How will the Alliance of Democracies respond to military strength?
By creating a voluntary response group of their own. It’s a branch of the alliance that doesn’t have a seat in Switzerland, but somewhere else in Europe or Asia.
Soldiers could volunteer to be part of said group and act when approved by the alliance. Sometimes the barrel of a gun decides whether there’s an absence of war, considering that authoritarians only understand the language of strength and determination. Let’s make sure our tiger has sharp teeth capable of tearing through the flesh of our enemies. We don’t need a large army for that, merely the strategy and equipment to inflict enough damage and losses that Russia, China and the US (or any other expansionist authoritarian country) will avoid prolonged conflict with us. - Combatting Climate Change
At first combatting the climate crisis seems out of place, because how does it help us against authoritarian nations? The answer is: our energy supply.
As long as we rely on fossil fuels, we will also rely on authoritarian countries like Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other nations. Not only would the transition therefore help you and my country to become more indepedent, it will also be an opportunity for sustainable job growth for countless generations.
Renewable energies are called renewable (like solar and wind), because they are basically infinite due to their nature (the sun will also shine in several million years) – unlike the finite source that is fossil fuels.
Moreover, through cooperation we can also tackle issues like depleting freshwater sources, because of the drier climate, and avoid wars over this essential resource.
I recommend reading the study „Upwind moisture supply increases risk to water security“ published in the Journal Nature Water (Open Access). Here the Abstract:
„Transboundary assessments of water security typically adopt an ‘upstream’ perspective, focusing on hazards and vulnerabilities occurring within a given hydrological basin. However, as the moisture that provides precipitation in the hydrological basin probably originates ‘upwind’, hazards and vulnerabilities potentially altering the moisture supply can be overlooked. Here we perform a global assessment of risk to water security in 379 hydrological basins accounting for upwind vulnerabilities and hazards from limited governance and environmental performance. We compare this upwind assessment with the more conventional approach focusing upstream. We find that accounting for upwind moisture supply increases the assessed risk to water security. The upwind perspective results in 32,900 km3 yr−1 of water requirements (that is, the specific water needs of vegetation for their development) under very high risk, compared with 20,500 km3 yr−1 under the upstream perspective. This study pinpoints the need to account for upwind moisture dependencies in global water-related risk assessments.“
As these two examples show: there are multiple solutions to the multiple crises we face. Even on a local level you’ll find such conflicts: if your city/county seeks to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector, it makes sense to make your cities bike-friendly. The parking space once used for cars can be repurposed for recreational activities, housing space or as a third place for people to meet and interact.
By planting trees you not only add an aesthetically pleasing aspect, but also create a place during hot Summers for the elderly to rest in the shadows of said trees.
You only need to look at Amsterdam for inspiration! The streets belong to the people.
Civil society might be especially effective in pushing for point 2, 3 and 5.
We also have to influence the narrative which can be done through reader’s letters (especially on a local level), public events, regular demonstrations, attending events where politician of the local, state or national level are present to ask questions and pressure them on these issues and through citizens initiatives, projects and market stalls (for example at local weekly markets) to spread information why we should do X or Y.
For aspiring politicians, point 1, 4 and 5 could be of interest. As well as those interested in these technologies and those directly involved in it on an industrial level.
If you haven’t done an interview before, prepare yourself (perhaps the political party or company has a course for this) in advance. Be clear and always have the broader picture in mind. Perhaps you already have connections with local politicians or activists of neighbouring countries (Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands – if you are a German citizen that is) which would give you a headstart.
Ideally, civil society and politics work in tandem.
Democracy is the rule by the people, after all. Our politicians are our representatives.
And it is so much more: separation of powers, independent media (which is why we should fight billionaires and rabble-rousers like the Axel-Springer Verlag in Germany), the rule of law (legal certainty), human and civil rights (enforceable through lawsuits too), collective rights (like the freedom to assembly and worker rights) and individual rights, academic freedom (freedom of science and research) etc.
The Future of Democracy – How Hope becomes Political
Now to the book in the background: I figured it’s worth writing about it (but I’m afraid it’s only available in German), so here’s the summary I wrote back in December:
In this book, the author argues that another reason for the surge of populists and the far-right is the lack of future perspectives in current democracies.
In the US it is the longing for the „American Dream“ where the past holds more perspectives for the voters than the future and during the Brexit campaign it was the idea of a „Global Britain“ which evoked the feeling of a glorious future outside of the EU.
France is probably a country with a „blatant lack of a future“ where a detailed narrative of decline and demise (déclinisme) is popular. According to Heidenreich, the prelude to this new genre was Nicolas Baverez essay „La France qui tombe: un constat clinique du déclin francais“ published in 2003. On this „market“, right-wing extremists like Éric Zemmour and Marine Le Pen offer their very own future and the grudge against Macron can also be understood as a president who promised too much future and enabled too little. There’s even a term in French for a lack of future: le présentisme. It means the stressed persistence in the presence.
Japan, on the other hand, is weirdly paralyzed: overaging is everywhere visible, young Japanese people completely abstain from marriage, don’t want any children and live without sex. The phenomenon of the Hikikomori show this as well: it is estimated that between 50,000 and 1.6 million Japanese (especially men) don’t leave their apartment and receive support from their relatives.
In Germany, the rise of the AfD is similarly mostly a result of a perceived estimiation that it, the country, goes downhill. The resentments against immigrants might also originate from their future perspectives: while immigrants may be poor in the presence, they seem to have a more promising future. AfD-voters, on the other hand, are wealthy, but lack future perspectives.
For authoritarian leaders like Erdogan in Türkiye and Putin in Russia, the past is used as a promise for a glamorous future, thus actively avoiding an examination of the presence with its multiple crises.
When it comes to the future, the author uses the French terms „avenir“ and „futur“ (as there’s only word for future in German: Zukunft). Avenir means to anticipate what comes (like a tsunami) and futur means actively shaping the future. We have to transform an unclear avenir to a manageable futur. This process, he elaborates, can be expressed as Futuring. In our day to day lives, we have trivial forms of futuring like saving plans, exercise plans, travel plans and construction plans. The antonym to Futuring would be Avenirism: for instance, if you invite people to an open forum with a controversial topic, one hopes that something (expected) unexpectedly occurs. It becomes eventful. Lastly, Over-Futuring would mean that one seeks to keep everything in control without the unexpected to have a chance to occur.

So, how does it tie in with Ukraine and the threat to our democracies?
Ukraine is a threat to Vladimir Putin and the authoritarians in Russia, because she shows that there’s a future possible within democracy. Similar to Taiwan. Their very existence prove that there’s a viable and vivid alternative to the bleak existence in authoritarianism.
While you may be able to gain economic wealth in China and Russia, there are little to no prospects for the future as the ruling party will remain the same and the lack of freedom of expression chokes off creativity, participation and self-realization (as the archaic structures deny the existence of equal rights for women, that the LGBT community existed for millennia and harshly sanctions dissident political and philosophical thought).
A victory of either Russia or China would thus doom millions to live similar bleak lives.
And only embolden them to increase the pressure against other democracies and further strengthen the fifth coloumn inside of them through funding, sabotage of infrastructure, propaganda, economic pressure (especially oil, gas and coal supply) and other measures.
By continuing to aid Ukraine and supporting them with military equipment, humanitarian aid, intelligence, logistics and repairing civil infrastructure that was deliberately bombed by Russia we not only defend their liberty, democracy and fight against imperialism and fascism, but we also show to the people in all of these other authoritarian nations that the democratic system of governance is neither weak nor without prospects!
For democracies, on the other hand, it means that we have to offer perspectives again.
We shouldn’t just talk about solving the crises we face, but also the opportunities the solutions to said crises would bring to the different communities within – a vision!
It’s not enough to talk about the problems and flaws our democracies have, but also how transparency and more participation – for instance – help in overcoming them and who the enemy of this development is. In other words: we need to do futuring.
Thus it turns us into a beacon of political hope that will outshine any autocracy.
By securing victory for Ukraine, we also strengthen the spirit of democracy.
By strengthening the spirit of democracy, we encourage nations like Taiwan.
By encouraging nations like Taiwan, we also embolden democratic movements.
By emboldening democratic movements, we lay the foundation to a democratic world.
And this foundation shall uproot all the current authoritarian governments.
Addendum: The Heritage Foundation’s War on the European Union
„The Polish investigative outlet VSquare revealed that the Heritage Foundation gathered hardline conservative groups on 11 March to hear how they would overhaul the current structures of the EU.
The “closed-door workshop” featured a debate on a new paper produced by the lobby groups MCC and Ordo Iuris entitled: “The Great Reset: Restoring Member State Sovereignty in the 21st Century”.
The paper proposes dismantling the European Commission and the European Court of Justice. It claims that the “EU is evolving into a quasi-federal state, limiting national decision-making power” and is imposing “ideologically motivated policies on member states, without any mandate”. Under the plan, the EU would cease to function in its current guise, and would instead be renamed the European Community of Nations (ECN).
Kenneth Haar, a researcher and campaigner at the transparency watchdog Corporate Europe Observatory, said it was “quite simply terrifying” to see the Heritage Foundation moving its attention to Europe.”
“Most of the attacks made by the Trump presidency in recent weeks on civil rights, on migrants, on LGBTQ+ rights and more, can be traced back to Project 2025,” he said. “We should be worried about them building up ambitions and strength in Europe.”“ (source: DeSmog)
This is a declaration of war on the European Union on the part of the Heritage Foundation!
These fascists aren’t satisfied with their victory in the US, so now they move on to another enemy of their reactionary worldview: the European Union.
As imperfect as the EU may sometime be, it is a threat to the worldview of the Heritage Foundation. A transnational organization that strengthens individual nations against bigger players like the US and China – preventing exploitation when trade agreements are made. They hate the notion of a free and democratic Europe, because our freedom entails worker rights, data protection and the opposition to autocratic Russia.
Imagine if China had a foundation that actively worked on dismantling the US, they would be showered in sanctions – minimum! And that’s the very thing we should do:
- Blacklist
Prohibit any members of the Heritage Foundation to visit EU-countries.
Deportation back to the US if members arrive or reside here. - Website Ban
They are a hostile foreign influence, actively trying to undermine the European Union.
As such, their website should be banned across the EU. - Freeze Assets
In case they have any assets within the European Union – freeze them. - Public Action
Inform all Europeans about their hostile intentions during an intensive 6-month campaign. Afterwards, remind the public occasionally who they are. - Transparency Action
Make the names public of those who were involved in this closed-door workshop and call them out for their betrayal. Furthermore, any member of the EU Parliament who participated in such activities or has contact to this enemy should be made public too.
We need to nip this in the bud quickly and decisively to send a strong message!
Let JD Vance cry and whine about it all he wants, but their authoritarian craze ends here!
